| Athitos / Folklore - Tradition / Traditional Professions | |
The people of Aphitos have retained from the ancient past the professions that were dictated by the potential that was given by nature, the existence of raw material, the heredity of skills and the needs of the people in that area. So until a few decades ago, and before the appearance of tourism as the main source of income, all these professions were still alive. In very difficult times they gave life to the lifeless so that we, today, can admire this unique settlement in Chalkidiki.
"Athitos. Its soul is all those men and women who lived and live and still work there. Farmers, shepherds, builders, craftsmen, potters, millers, beekeepers, shipbuilders, fishermen... And the women who, as in many places, did double work, on the land and at home and taught their children to speak. And Aristotle's words for Athitos and its people. And the memories, the feelings, the scent, the sounds, the wind, the music, the birds of the day and night, the fishing nets and fishing lamps, the animals in the fields and in the watering places, the threshing grounds near the homesteads, the moonshine above the stockyards and the neolithic citadel" ...... Place rich in water and soil, held all the prerequisites to help the development of art and pottery. In the archaeological survey many earthenware vessels were found that revealed the existence of this craft from ancient times. In the last two centuries there were many potters who supplied vessels to many parts of Chalkidiki. They were transported with animals and mainly by small boats. The soil was very tough to handle but it was unwearable. As it was reported taxes on potters during the Turkish occupation were charged according to the weight of the vessels and this was a great incentive for the potters to make much finer and daintier vessels. Apart from the local potters, during the German occupation the famous potter Charalmbos Avramidis, worked in Aphitos too. The profession has now faded away. Professions that have now eclipsed are: Blacksmiths (Dimitrios Halkias, Angelos Halkias, Papanikitas Theoharoudis), stonecutters (Costandis Alvanos, Antonis Alvanos, Thanasis Alvanos, Christos Alvanos), shipbuilders (Georgios Argiroudis) dyers (George Voyatzis), tailors (Vasilios Deligiannis, Petros Athanasiadis, Dimitrios - Vasilios Makris), cartmakers (Aristodimos Athanasiadis), coopers (Garifalos Valaroutsos, Athanasios Andreou), saddlers (Ioannis Sarikas, Athanasios Papavasiliou), farriers, (Dimitrios Vlahakis), ship masters (Nicholas - Dimitris Nikoleas, Sophocles Argiroudis), stockbreeders (Dimitrios Giovanis, Leonidas Papavasiliou, Dimitrios Filippou, Dimitrios Galanis, the Stavrou Bros, the Katsanis Bros), mills - millers (the Nicoleikos windmill, the Pavleikos windmill, the Katsaneikos, the Stameikos, the windmill of Anastasios Milonas, the Aletradeikos watermill), olive press owners (Constantinos Katsanis, Garifallos Valaroutsos), winemakers (tsipouro makers - Constantinos Katsanis, Garifallos Valaroutsos), shoemakers (Georgalis Salametis, Athanasios Pavlis, Athanasios Stamoulis), tinsmith (Nestoras Floros), coffeehouse keepers (Constantinos Alvanos, Dimitrios Filippou, Christos Pavlis, Christodoulos Kotsaftikis), dealers (Constantinos Katsanis), sericulturists (Constantinos Katsanis, the Aletra Bros), and many more. The best stonecutters came from Northern Ipirus . They built the church of St. Dimitios in accordance with the directions given to them by a monk of a nearby monastery. They took on the surname "Alvanos". The foreman signed his name as "Mastrochristos" (i.e. Master Christos). Home handicraft has to some extent been retained till today. In the past every house in the village had chickens, goats, weaving looms, olive trees, vineyards, wheat fields, vegetable gardens and melon fields, brush brooms, tobacco, chick peas, lentils, corn, cotton, bread ovens. Certain professions have been preserved till today but they are continuously fading away. These are: Grocer (Constantinos - Georgios Katsanis, Rigas Katsanis, Christodoulos Katsanis, Ioannis Galanis, Dimitrios Vlahakis, Petros Katsanis, Yiannis Sarikas, Tilemachos Paralis, George Paralis), fishing (fishermen: Nicholaos Tsoukalas, Ioannis Argiroudis, Panagiotis Sarikas), beekeepers (Vasilis Pavlis, Christodoulos Pavlis, Themistocles Pavlis, Georgios - Dimitrios Milonas, Themistocles Manios). |
